When is application deadline?

Application deadline for the course starting mid of September 2010 is June 15, 2010.

What is expected from me in the interview?

The interview is a part of the aptitude test. Passing it is a basic requirement for the enrolment to the master’s degree course Applied Computational Mechanics. It is an oral test (in English or German language) which will last 30 minutes, taking place in June or July.

Within the interview you will be asked for basic knowledge of mechanics and physics that you already acquired during your studies and your work experience. Also, you may be asked for some description on a project that you dealt with during your thesis or business.

How long will it take to finish the master's degree course?

The part-time master program takes two years (four German semesters) including the master thesis. Participants are required to be present during the first three semesters for 11 weeks (mainly two connected weeks at one time) and 14 weekends (600 contact hours with 45 minutes each). Additionally considerable self-studies will be necessary. Times of presence take place at both universities.

What is the teaching language of the master's degree program?

The master's degree program is completely taught in English. Therefore a TOEFL score of 80 ibT, 213 CBT, or equivalent test results as proof of sufficient knowledge of the English language are required.

Some knowledge of German is helpful, though.

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) assesses the ability of non-native speakers of English to use and understand North American English as it is spoken, written and heard in college and university settings. The TOEFL test measures English language proficiency in reading, listening and writing and is offered in most regions of the world.

What are the tuition fees?

Tuition fees are 5,000 Euro per semester, which includes all costs for lectures, labs, examinations, use of the library, software and scripts. Expenses for travelling and accommodation must also be considered.

Is there a possibility of financial support?

We regret that neither esoceat nor the Universities of Applied Sciences are able to offer you financial support. Students may apply to their company for financial help. Moreover, please note that in Germany further education costs are tax deductible.

Will the master's degree enable me to a doctorate?

As a matter of principle, a master's degree awarded by a German university of applied science enables to earn a doctorate at a German university. However, individual admission depends on the university's respective regulations of doctorates. Sometimes applicants for a doctoral thesis may be required to attend an interview before beginning their thesis.

Will the master's degree enable me to a career in higher/senior service in Germany?

The official seal of approval of the German Accreditation council confirms that the Master of Engineering in Applied Computational Mechanics enables to enter a career in higher/senior service.

Who controls the quality of the course?

That is a very important detail for you when looking for the best course. The German federal states have established an accreditation system in order to check each new bachelor or master. Accreditation is carried out by independent accreditation agencies; each approved course receives a “seal of approval” awarded by the accreditation council. However, all courses have to be authorized by the respective federal ministry of science as well. In Germany, accreditation may be carried out before or after beginning a course. Contrary to accreditation in the US, in Germany only courses and not whole faculties or universities are accredited.

The Master of Engineering in Applied Computational Mechanics has received the official seal of approval of the German Accreditation Council. A peer review carried out by independent auditors and co-ordinated by the German accreditation agency ASIIN (Member of ENQUA) proved the well-balanced and practice-oriented curriculum to provide its graduates with excellent perspectives.

What is ECTS?

The master's curriculum is based on the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System. ECTS is a student-centred system based on the student workload required to achieve the objectives of a program, objectives preferably specified in terms of the learning outcomes and competences to be acquired.

Isn't a master course just a diploma with another name?

No, it's not. The difference is that you will finish your studies faster. A bachelor may be obtained after six semesters (instead of eight or nine semesters for a final degree) in order to enter a professional career. A master course usually takes three to four semesters and may or may not follow up a bachelor.

Why a reorganization from a diploma to a bachelor/master system?

To make education in Europe comparable, European politicians in 1998 decided to establish a European area of higher education (Bologna declaration). They agreed on a two-staged bachelor/master system based on modularization and a credit point system (ECTS). 

Will a company accept my master's degree?

Generally, companies in Germany get used to the new system and its titles. The so called global players should have no problem with a bachelor or a master. When in doubt, you should check with your company of choice – as you should get in touch with a variety of companies anyway in order to secure internships or to test your chances on the market.

I already have a bachelor. Why should I decide to study again for a master's degree?

A master's degree is the possibility to deepen your knowledge in order to improve your professional and career chances. It may follow up a bachelor course. However, some people prefer to work before again entering university.

Will my master's degree be accepted in the US?

Generally, European bachelors and masters are accepted in the US but occasionally will be subjected to an examination of the individual case.
