University Certificate Computational Medical Engineering

In the interdisciplinary career-integrated short study course, participants acquire medical and technical skills that serve as a basis for the successful use of simulation in medicine, medical technology or ergonomic applications.

The innovative concept was developed in cooperation with the Centre for Continuing Education and Training at the University of Witten/Herdecke.

Participant Group

The certificate course is aimed at engineers and professionals with technical education who work in the field of medicine or medical technology. In addition, we also address companies that want to develop ergonomic products and processes and to enhance their employees' skills quickly and comprehensively.

Individual support takes into account both the interests of beginners in simulation and those of experienced newcomers from other application areas.

Course Modules

Module 1: Medical Fundamentals for Engineers

As a basis for the simulation, you

  • understand the structure of bones, muscles, and tendons in the human body.
  • are able to describe composition and function of major joints as a basis for simulation models.
  • can explain the function of heart and blood circulation.
  • communicate with customers from the medical branch confidently.

Module 2: Regulatory Affairs for Development of Medical Devices

For the effective use of simulation, you

  • know which technical documentations are required or must be submitted for approval.
  • can create a risk management file.
  • know the EU medicine regulations, especially in matters of simulation.
  • have an overview of the potential to use simulation in a CE or FDA approval.

Module 3: Biomechanical Simulation

For simulation, you

  • have an overview on the state-of-the-art and potential of simulation in medical applications.
  • understand how to build biomechanical models.
  • know from where to get material data for biomechanical simulations.
  • can determine load cases for the human body.
  • know the huge potential and typical applications of multi-parameter optimization.


  • University Certificate / Certificate of Advanced Studies gaining 15 ECTS credits
  • Each module completes with a written exam, student paper or a project presentation
  • Each module is suitable for study on a stand-alone basis

If interested, you may complete this university certificate through course offerings at other universities, including the module “Finite Element Method” or “Fluid Dynamics and Heat Transfer,” for example.

University Witten/Herdecke

The first private university in Germany was created in 1983 in Witten. Since then, its students and the development of their curiosity and potential have been at the center. Continuing Humboldt's ideal of education, the university sees itself as an entrepreneurial university, as defined by the unity of research, teaching and practical testing. The original idea of the founders in 1983, was to provide a medical school inside and out: practice-oriented, and this from the very beginning on. The goal: doctors should have plenty of experience with their patients, and this should not be restricted to one specific type of case. Today the new doctors’ licensing regulations are based on the Witten model.
